How to highlight text in a PDF

Reviewing long PDF reports or research papers is much easier when you mark key points. Our editor lets you highlight text in a PDF directly in your browser.

Step 1. Upload your PDF file

Drag and drop your document into the editor workspace or the upload area. You can also select it directly from your device storage.

Step 2. Choose a highlight color

Click the Text Highlight tool and pick a color from the top toolbar. You can also open the style menu to adjust custom visual effects like blend modes.

Step 3. Highlight your text

Drag your cursor across any words, titles, or numbers you want to mark. The color appears instantly while keeping the original text easy to read.

Step 4. Save your document

Click the Done button when you finish reviewing your file. Download the updated PDF back to your device using the format you need.

Highlight in different colors

Color-coding makes reading long documents much easier. You can change highlight color at any time to organize your notes quickly.

Assign specific colors to group your information:

  • Yellow: Mark core statements and key takeaways for quick skimming.

  • Blue: Highlight quotes, references, annotations, or links you need to check later.

  • Green: Flag approved sections or completed tasks.

  • Red: Mark errors, questions, or items that need editing.

Picking a color takes just one click on the top toolbar before you select your text. Use the Opacity button to change color strength.

Remove or edit highlights

How to remove highlights in PDF files?

It depends on when the color was added. If you make a mistake during your current editing session, click the Undo button in the top menu bar. This reverses your recent actions and removes the color overlay immediately.

If you are working with a file created or edited before your session and it already has flattened or scanned highlights, you can fix the page with a quick hack:

  • Step 1. Scan the page with OCR: Run our OCR tool to convert the flattened text into an editable format.

  • Step 2. Edit the page text: Modify the extracted content to erase the unwanted background color.

  • Step 3. Merge the new page: Use our Merge tool to insert the updated, clean page back into your main PDF.

  • Step 4. Delete the original page: Use the Delete Page tool to remove the old page containing the permanent mark.

Highlight without losing quality

When you highlight PDF files with our editor, your document keeps its full visual quality. Many basic tools re-encode entire pages during editing. This often blurs sharp text and lowers image quality.

Our tool works differently. It places your chosen colors onto a separate layer on top of the page. This keeps your original layout, fonts, and images completely untouched. Every word stays sharp, and every page keeps its original formatting. You can mark key points, print your files, or share documents without losing resolution.
